What is counselling?
In the simplest terms, counselling is a purposeful conversation between two people where they explore problems, identify the goals of therapy, and work out solutions to bring the client to the place they want to be in life.
You can come into session individually, as a couple, or as two people who want to resolve an shared issue. The sessions take place face to face, online or over the telephone.
I work within a person-centred approach, meaning that I am very much driven by what you bring into the conversation. It might look like a very general chat, or I might be a bit more directive in my questioning as a way to help you navigate a particular issue. One of the hardest hings to do is to put your point of view and feelings into words, but I am here to help you with that process, so you can gain a deeper understanding about your feelings and emotions and how they are impacting your situation. What we talk about it very much dependent on you and your willingness to engage on that deeper emotional level, or at least try! I will not impede your flow, try to persuade you otherwise, or influence you way of thinking, I am here to actively listen and help identify the solutions that are right for you and your life!
People come to counselling for a myriad of reasons, such as:
- relationship issues
- to reconcile complicated childhoods memories
- to make sense of feelings, emotions, or thoughts
- to work through past and present life events
- or any difficult situation that is impeding your ability to live a happy, peaceful and content life
The truth is, counselling is the opportunity for you to get to know yourself and to live your life with a sense of freedom that is obtained by letting go of the conditions that have been placed on your happiness through all your life experiences.
Talking to an experienced therapist can help you understand yourself better and help you turn your problems into your provision.
